Scholarship Fund 2022

Our very first scholarship fund was created with the proceeds from the recent sale of our PIA Calendar 2022. Please fill out the application and upload all requested items by the April 11, 2022 deadline. See below for application. 

PURPOSE OF SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

  • To connect with others through awareness about our shared cultural heritage

 

  • To motivate the younger generation to understand their family’s journey from Poggioreale to America

 

  • To foster a sense of cultural identity by connecting students to their family roots in Sicily and how it affects who they are today

 

 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • High school senior accepted and/or enrolled in a US accredited institution of higher education (college/university/technical/vocational school) on a full-time basis for the Fall 2022 semester (proof of acceptance).

  • Minimum GPA of 3.2 on a 4-point scale (or the equivalent) for the previous 3.5 years (Freshman through first semester Senior year of high school). Students enrolled in pass/fail grading system may have additional requirements.

  • United States Citizen or permanent resident alien, and show descendancy from an immigrant of Poggioreale within six generations.

  • Student must register as a member of PIA Junior, and have a parent, grandparent or legal guardian with a PIA membership. Please subscribe to the mailing list on the homepage (at the bottom) of www.poggiorealeinamerica.com to become a member (adults). If 18 and under, there is a box on this application that allows you to join PIA Junior. Just check the box on the application. 

 

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION PROCESS

  • Completed application form (see below)

  • Unofficial High School Transcripts (through first semester Senior year)

  • One 300-to-500-word essay written by the applicant based on a question related to our shared cultural heritage. Essay question provided on application.

  • Two letters of recommendation. One from a teacher; another from an adult leader who knows student through an extracurricular activity, sport, volunteer service, or religious affiliation, etc.

  • Family tree from student to verify Poggioreale ancestor

 

SCHOLARSHIP SPECIFICS AND FUNDS ALLOCATION

  • Five (5) United States student scholarships, $1000 each.

  • One (1) Poggioreale Education Project (with approval through Mayor Cangelosi for a pre-determined project), $750.
